RARE Blackout // Hubert Aquin // 1st U.S. Paperback Printing 1974 // Vintage Paperback

House of Anansi Press: 1st U.S. Paperback Printing, 1974.

The first English translation of Aquin's experimental novel, first published in French in 1968. Translated by Alan Brown. Hubert Aquin was a Quebec writer, filmmaker, and activist.

"In Blackout, which appeared originally as Trou de memoire, Aquin demonstrates his uncanny erudition which has its roots in medieval science and literature. A druggist revolutionary kills the book's main character, Joan, at the outset of the novel and then pursues her memory through the rest of the book..."

Jean Remple of the Montreal Gazette said the following about Aquin's writing:
"Aquin's novels...are best seen as being translucent instead of opaque. He sets up situations as though he were aligning very thin and delicate stained-glass windows. Each window is an enigma. But to arrive at a synthesis, you must look through the series of windows."

Good condition overall with some wear and tear to the covers and spine. Slight curling to the corners. Pencil erasure mark on the first page. Yellowing to the pages. Some staining/discoloration to the side outer edge of pages.
